Addition and Renovation to Landmark Home in McLean, Virginia

Homeowner Challenge:

After living abroad for over 20 years, the owners of this property returned to the states and the home they had rented out while they were gone. Built in 1910, the property had unfortunately fallen into disrepair.  The house had settled over time and needed significant structural work to stabilize the foundation, level the floors and stairs, and make the home secure again.  The challenge was to bring the home up to livable standards with modern updates, while keeping the charm of this landmark property.

The BOWA Solution:

The BOWA design team went to work to make this house a safe, functional home.  The program included securing the original foundation, and a three-story addition that created a finished basement storage area, expanded the kitchen, and added a mudroom, laundry room, full bathroom and den to the first floor.  A European open concept was enhanced with new French doors creating access to the side yard from new first-floor space.  The addition also includes a luxurious second-floor master suite, with a master bathroom featuring a large soaking tub and vanities.  BOWA brought this home into the 21st century with luxury finishes and all the conveniences of modern living, while staying true to the original feel of the home.  The design highlights the homeowners’ international furniture and art collection, surrounding them with memories of their time abroad.
