Family Room Addition in Bethesda, Maryland

Homeowner Challenge:

The goal for the renovation of this classic Bethesda home was to create additional spaces for the family to enjoy and enhance the home overall for convenience and livability to better suit their busy lifestyle.

The BOWA Solution:

Several challenges encountered by the design build contractor were the result of the original builder (a commercial developer) using commercial construction materials and methods when he built the home for himself in the mid-1960s. Tying into a structure made almost entirely of steel and concrete and bringing it up to current codes required a high level of engineering expertise that BOWA was able to provide.  Design challenges such as the installation of a flat roof required additional expertise and care, as did minimizing the impact of the renovation on the family who lived in the home during the remodel.  The finished design includes an addition off the kitchen, a second-story roof top deck, a renovated patio and pergola and the relocation of the existing laundry room.  In addition, a new family foyer with a full bath was created in a repurposed space.

Project Highlights:

  • Sun-filled family room addition allows for gatherings and casual meals
  • French doors offer egress to renovated patio with new pergola
  • Roof top deck features sweeping views of the rear yard
  • New family foyer with custom lockers for school and sports storage
