BOWA Expert Kristin Ikenson Joins the Development Committee at 826DC
At the end of 2023, BOWA Project Leader, Kristin Ikenson was thrilled to join the Development Committee at 826DC!
826DC is a DC-based arts education organization dedicated to supporting youth students with their creative and expository writing skills. As a nonprofit, they offer free writing programs and publishing opportunities for students ages 6-18. Currently, their services are being provided to over 2,000 students annually throughout all wards of the District, and they partner with more than three dozen schools to achieve their mission.
Since 826DC was founded back in 2008, more than 350 young authors have been featured in publications including NYT Magazine, The Washington Post, NPR and CBS News. 826DC is also part of a national network of writing centers, 826 National, co-founded by author Dave Eggers and educator Nínive Calegari. Through digital resources and in-person programs, 826DC and their fellow 826 chapters across the country serve close to 350,000 students annually.
Kristin is currently helping with the planning/organization of one of their largest fundraiser of the year, Trivia for Cheaters. This is an annual event that allows players to “purchase” cheats by making donations to 826DC, helping them advance in a pub-style trivia game. Journalists Clinton Yates, Chris Cillizza, Mike Wise, and Ken Vogel have hosted the previous events, and those in attendance include some of Washington’s elite journalists, representatives from corporate sponsors, and congressional chiefs of staff.
“826DC is thrilled to work with Kristin and to have her support with this Trivia for Cheaters fundraiser,” said 826DC Director of Development, Emma Pred-Sosa. “When talented people like Kristin come together to sustain opportunities for young writers, the whole community benefits! We’re so excited for the work we’ll do together, at this event and beyond.”
This year’s Trivia for Cheaters will take place on January 25th, 2024 from 6:00pm-8:00pm at the William & Mary Washington Center (901 4th Street NW). Proceeds will go directly to 826DC’s free writing programs!
