Modern Whole-House Renovation in Arlington, Virginia

Homeowner Challenge:

The cookie-cutter aesthetic of this home did not match the owner’s sleek, contemporary design ideas. It originally featured traditional, beige tones in the fixtures, walls and floors, which felt dated and old-fashioned. The kitchen and master bathroom both functioned awkwardly, and the staircase was an unwelcoming focal point at the main entrance of the house. The homeowner knew a renovation could make this house a modern oasis.

The BOWA Solution:

By carefully selecting design details and reconfiguring rooms, the home was transformed into a contemporary space. The staircase went from traditional wooden spirals, to a sleek, glass statement piece. This design element now sets the tone for the rest of the home as soon as you walk in the front door. In the kitchen, the awkward peninsula that cut the room in half was replaced with a large island that allows easy flow through the space. The whole home was updated with cool gray and white tones, specifically seen in the new wood flooring and kitchen details. The master bathroom now has a spa-like feel with a unique shower location hidden behind the tiled accent wall. The homeowner’s design combined with BOWA’s expertise created a sophisticated, modern home in Arlington.

Project Highlights:

  • Contemporary, glass staircase
  • Updated first-floor in-law suite with universal design bathroom details
  • Reconfigured master bathroom to capitalize on natural light from existing skylights and windows
