BOWA was founded in 1988, by two college friends just a few years after their graduation. Since then the duo has built a world-class team of remodeling experts. The team includes trained architectural professionals, the area’s leading green building expert, the former chapter president of NARI, VPs of Production with 35+ years of experience, Project Supervisors who have been with BOWA for more than 30 years, and 78 employees committed to delivering heroic customer service every day.
For Larry Weinberg, running his own business was always a dream and passion. He graduated from the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia in 1985, and shortly thereafter earned his CPA certificate. He went on to work for Arthur Andersen in its small-business division, but left the corporate world less than a year later to found BOWA Builders with his college friend, Josh Baker, in 1988. Starting with little capital, Larry worked in almost every aspect of the company, both out in the field and in the office. In the early years, he developed the remodeling-production systems, as well as the administrative and financial systems used in the office. Today, Larry’s duties as Co-Chairman include marketing and branding, spearheading strategic management, evaluating new opportunities, and directing the corporate culture and company vision.An avid entrepreneur Larry joined the Washington, D.C. Young Entrepreneur’s Organization (YEO) in the 1990’s and later became a member of the board. Then in 2000, he graduated from the Birthing of Giants Program, jointly sponsored by YEO, Inc. magazine and the MIT Enterprise Forum. He continued pursuing his love of business by joining the Washington Chapter of the Young Presidents Organization (YPO) where he quickly became the Chairman of the Washington Metro Chapter.
Having grown up in Richmond, Larry lives in McLean with his wife, Kim, and children, Alexa and Dillon. Larry’s personal interests include sailing, mountain climbing, mountain biking, and triathlons. Larry’s latest adventure involved visiting 26 countries on 5 continents with his family. The experience brought the family closer together while learning from other cultures, completing community service projects on multiple continents, and seeing some of the world’s most interesting sites.
In 1988, Josh founded BOWA along with his college friend, Larry Weinberg. As young entrepreneurs, they identified the metropolitan Washington remodeling market as growing and in need of a truly professional, full-service remodeling company. For over 30 years, Josh has focused on growth of the company with revenue increasing from $250,000 to $40 million. He guides strategic management of the company, revenue generation and continual coaching of team members. Recognized nationally as an expert in the industry, Josh is quoted regularly in publications, including The Washington Post, Better Homes and Gardens and Remodeling, and is an invited speaker at local and national industry meetings. A Great Falls native, Josh still enjoys living there with his wife, Jill. Together, they train service dogs for veterans, with many of the dogs making regular visits to our McLean office. David joined BOWA in 2002, bringing with him more than 10 years of entrepreneurial business and legal experience. Originally BOWA’s Vice President of New Business Development and General Counsel, David guided the team in developing complementary product offerings. Now, as CEO, David is focused on overseeing all operations and business activities of BOWA; steering BOWA’s long-term vision and strategy; ensuring that BOWA maintains a world class workforce; and managing all aspects of the company to provide an unsurpassed client experience. Before joining BOWA, David acted as COO and General Counsel of two start-up technology companies, managing their growth in several critical areas, including business development, project management and resource management. Prior to joining the technology companies, David built a successful legal practice as a partner with Flyer & Gould, specializing in business law and commercial litigation. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan, his legal degree from Georgetown University, and a master’s degree in project management from George Washington University.
Jim joined BOWA in 1988 and has been an owner of the company since 1999. After graduating college, Jim came on board and quickly rose through the ranks. His previous positions with BOWA included Project Manager, Production Manager and Vice President of Production. In 2001, Jim was promoted to Chief Knowledge Officer, a position that encompasses human resources, information technology and the training and development of BOWA’s employees. In his current role, Jim also plays an active role in company-wide strategic planning and defining BOWA’s future. Jim is a graduate of the University of Virginia and continues his education by keeping current in construction management and technology. In his spare time, Jim enjoys sailing, playing soccer, coaching youth sports and playing guitar. Jim lives in Arlington with his wife and two children.
David has been with BOWA since 1989, and an owner since 2001. David has more than 20 years of experience in financial and administrative operations and systems. He has held several different positions within the company, including Director of Operations and Chief Financial Officer. Currently David directs the day-to-day functions of the accounting and administrative departments, with a particular emphasis on BOWA’s financial operations. Over the years, David has successfully implemented a state-of-the-art job cost accounting and financial reporting system, has overseen the implementation of a Sarbanes Oxley compliant internal-control system, and has managed an in-depth risk and insurance audit, which resulted in optimizing the company’s insurance coverage. David is a Certified Public Accountant, with a B.S. in finance and a Post Baccalaureate Accounting Certificate from George Mason University’s School of Business. David also worked at Arthur Andersen in its Process Solutions and Business Consulting Group, with a primary focus on software implementation, optimization and business consulting for a variety of middle-market and Fortune 500 clients. He also worked as a financial analyst with Prudential Bache Securities. David lives in Northern Virginia with his wife and two daughters.
One of the principals at BOWA and a member of the BOWA team since 1994, Steve has over 30 years of experience in nearly all phases of residential construction. As the Team Leader for the Maryland and Washington, D.C. portions of the business, Steve is intimately involved with all aspects of his projects, and takes particular satisfaction in his daily interaction with his clients. Steve holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Construction Engineering from Arizona State University and an MBA from American University. Prior to joining BOWA, Steve was a Vice President at his family’s company, Richmarr Construction. During his time there, his responsibilities included the construction of hundreds of single-family, town home and multi-family residences, as well as high-rise apartment buildings and other commercial structures. Although Steve has served on numerous boards and community organizations, he is particularly pleased to currently serve on the Board of Directors of the National Capital Area Autism Speaks organization. A company owner since 2007, John has more 20 years of experience in the construction industry. A Washington, D.C. area native, John graduated from The Catholic University of America with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. After graduating, John spent five years working with Habitat for Humanity International. Although he lived in Georgia at the time, he was able to work on building homes across the country, as well as in Europe and Asia. After moving back to the area in 1999, John joined BOWA as a Project Manager and shortly thereafter became a Production Manager. Now as production vice president, John oversees all of BOWA’s projects in Washington, D.C., Arlington, Alexandria and portions of McLean. He currently resides in Washington, D.C.
Tim joined BOWA in early 2012 as a Vice President focused on guiding our Loudoun and Fauquier County clients through every step of the remodeling experience, and joined BOWA’s Ownership Group in 2018. He has worked in the design/ build construction industry for over 30 years, and is well versed in all facets of residential construction. He is a third generation builder, certified remodeler, industry instructor, and nationally recognized speaker on the remodeling design /build process. Tim has a BFA in design from James Madison University, as well as post-graduate studies in Project Management from Keller Graduate School of Business Management. Prior to joining BOWA, Tim was the President and Chairman of the Board of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry, Metro DC Chapter and won the chapter’s Capital Contractor of the Year award many times. During his tenure, Tim was featured in The Washington Post and other newspapers and magazines, and was an industry expert for the FOX Television Network. One of the highlights of his career was being the Lead Project Manager of Construction for the Emmy Award winning construction reality television show, Extreme Makeover Home Edition, that aired on ABC Television. He describes his experience on the show as “a once in a lifetime opportunity” and takes great joy in having been able to help so many deserving families. Tim is the Construction Advisor for The Mosby Heritage Area Association, and also sits on the Board of Building Appeals for Fauquier County, VA. A Northern Virginia native, Tim, his wife and three children reside in Fauquier County in a 1800’s farmhouse that they remodeled. Learn more about Tim!
Jim joined BOWA in 2013 as a project leader, and brings with him over 25 years of business and remodeling experience. He joined BOWA’s Ownership Group in 2019. Jim enjoys collaborating with clients to learn more about their challenges and goals to develop the optimal design solution. He is a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) through the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). Before joining BOWA, Jim was a managing partner in a Virginia design build remodeling firm, which he joined after founding and successfully running his own renovation business for several years. Prior to that, Jim was a senior technology sales and business development professional with companies such as VeriSign and Network Associates, where he focused on developing C-level relationships and strategic partnerships impacting increased growth and revenue. Jim attributes his success in these roles to his consultative approach to selling and commitment to always delivering solutions that exceed expectations. Jim is a natural decision maker, problem solver and team builder, which has served him well throughout his career. Jim lives in Ashburn, Virginia with his wife and two sons. Lisa joined BOWA in 2016 as a Project Leader and brings with her over 14 years of experience in residential remodeling. Having grown up in East Detroit, Lisa attended Michigan State University where she earned a degree in Interior Design and interned at a few local firms. Upon graduation, she moved to DC for a job in design build residential construction, specializing in kitchens and baths in the District. With a keen eye for both design and the installation of building materials, Lisa is comfortable behind the drafting table as well as in the field at clients’ project sites and enjoys bringing together both the design and production aspects of her projects. Her commitment to going above-and-beyond in terms of customer service as well as her passion for design make Lisa a perfect fit for BOWA and our clients. Lisa belongs to NARI and ASID and her experience and dedication has won her many remodeling industry awards, including Professional Remodeler 40 under 40 and multiple awards for outstanding kitchen designs in the DC Metro area. Lisa is very active in the community, as a volunteer at Horace Mann Elementary School in DC and member of both the DC Triathlon Club and the DC Spartans MSU Alumni Association. She lives in McLean Gardens, DC with her husband, Dave, and they spend a lot of time outdoors, taking advantage of local parks, trails, museums and events. Steve joined BOWA in 2015 as a Project Leader focused on guiding clients in the Vienna, Oakton and Fairfax areas through every step of their remodeling experiences. He brings to BOWA a long history of success both as a business owner and manager, having spent the past twelve years as Senior Project Developer with a residential design/build firm in the area. He’s an enthusiastic team builder and decision maker who loves the strategic planning involved in complex projects and demanding timelines. Steve also enjoys creating master plans for clients that address both the immediate and long-term goals of their homes. Steve’s been successful working closely with Realtors and their clients to advise on the feasibility and budgets associated with assumed renovations after purchase. Steve is a Certified Remodeler, Certified Kitchen and Bath Remodeler, and Universal Design Certified Professional through the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI). His strong commitment to continuing education in our industry benefits both clients and colleagues alike. In his spare time Steve loves spending time in nature, whether in the mountains, on a golf course, or entertaining on his patio. Chris Smith joined BOWA as a Project Leader in 2018, bringing with him over 30 years of experience in construction and real estate development. He has always had a passion for real estate, working in residential construction in high school then remodeling and new home construction in college. After graduating from Loyola University with a degree in Marketing and Finance, he started his career in commercial real estate, then after 18 years moved to residential development building single-family homes. Owning his own business for the past 15 years, he came to BOWA with a wealth of knowledge in all facets of the residential construction industry. While running his own business he worked on everything from sales, project management, budgeting, and design. His favorite part of his job is collaborating with clients and guiding them from the first call to completion of their projects. He has lived in Bethesda for the last 35 years, coaching his five children in lacrosse, soccer, and basketball as they grew up in Montgomery County. His kids are now grown with children of their own, making Chris a grandfather of three boys. TJ joined BOWA as a Project Leader in April of 2017, then transitioned to our Vice President of Design in January of 2019. He says designing and working in the home industry is the only thing he can remember ever wanting to do…other than playing center field for the Yankees! As a kid growing up in Long Island, Legos were his gateway to residential design. Then, as time marched on, his interest manifested in countless cardboard models of houses, drafting classes in high school and two degrees in Architecture from The Catholic University of America. Over 15 years of practical experience later, and, not only does he still love houses, but more importantly, he’s found that he truly enjoys helping other people love their homes. TJ believes if he does his job right, then he can improve the way his clients live, and hopefully, make them happier in the process. He and his wife have remodeled their previous homes several times, and in 2016 designed and built their current home in Kensington, Maryland, where they live with their two children and, of course, a basement full of Legos.
Stephanie joined BOWA in 2016 as a Designer on our In-House Design Team. She grew up in Radford, Virginia and went to Radford University, where she majored in Interior Design. Having worked for residential design build firms in the past, Stephanie brings with her years of kitchen and bath design experience. Her knowledge of materials and products and her impeccable eye for detail, make Stephanie a wonderful addition to BOWA’s team. Stephanie loves working with clients to create spaces that perfectly fit their needs both aesthetically and functionally. She is a NARI Universal Design Certified Professional (UDCP) and her designs have been featured in The Washington Post and on Houzz. Stephanie lives in Vienna, VA and, in her free time, enjoys yoga, painting and drawing. Basically, Stephanie enjoys anything that allows her to express herself creatively…both at work and at play!
Before joining our In-House Design Team in 2018, Paulina Garcia built her design and architecture portfolio in Mexico. She grew up in Mexico City and graduated from National Autonomous University of Mexico with a degree in Architecture. She worked in Mexico City as a trained architect then moved to Cancun with Artigas Architects. With a desire to become fluent in another language, she moved to the United States and worked as an au pair for two years in Gainesville, Virginia before beginning her career with BOWA as a Designer. She has a passion for helping families find practical solutions for the homes and making sure they enjoy the process of designing their remodels. When not designing, she enjoys reading, photography, painting, drawing, and spending time with her husband and daughter.
A member of our In-House Design Team since November 2017, Andrew earned his master’s degree in architecture from The University of Pennsylvania. He joined our team as a Designer shortly after graduation and has quickly built upon his residential remodeling knowledge. Before pursuing his passion in architecture, Andrew attended Occidental College in Los Angeles. There he earned his undergraduate degree in Diplomacy and World Affairs and then worked in the Public Health sector. Having lived in DC since childhood, Andrew brings a local’s perspective to remodeling in the district and surrounding areas. He currently lives in Mount Pleasant with his fiancée, and in his free time he plays soccer and golf, and especially enjoys cooking.
All our projects in construction and beyond benefit from the expertise of BOWA’s Vice President, Best Practices Doug Horgan. With BOWA since 1989, Doug is a nationally recognized remodeling speaker and author and a consummate learner. He views every trouble-shooting instance as an opportunity to improve upon our already high construction standards. Doug is an NAHB Certified Graduate Remodeler and was the first person in the Washington area to achieve the NAHB’s Certified Green Professional designation. He is a LEED Accredited Professional with the Homes specialty. He also carries certifications from the Building Performance Institute and is a NARI Green Certified Professional. Doug has been an instructor for the NARI Green Remodeling class and is a frequent speaker on green remodeling topics.
Mark, an owner since 2003, came to BOWA in early 1998 after relocating to the Washington area from upstate New York. Prior to joining BOWA, Mark was the owner of a successful home building and remodeling company for 22 years. Originally hired by BOWA as a Production Manager, Mark was promoted to Vice President of Production in 2001.
Mick joined BOWA in June 2015, and brings with him over 27 years of residential construction experience. He attended California State University at Long Beach where he earned a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering. After working at Hewlett Packard for 5 years, he switched career paths to pursue his passion in residential construction. Having successfully run his own remodeling firm in California for several years, Mick moved to Northern Virginia in 1992, where he began working for a new home builder. Over the next 19 years with that firm, Mick built several hundred new homes and became a firm believer that better processes yielded better, more consistent results. Mick then returned to his remodeling roots and continued to apply these same principles to his large-scale insurance restoration work. Mick’s commitment to quality and efficiency, depth of knowledge and vast long-term relationships with subcontractors and vendors is invaluable to the BOWA team and our clients. Mick lives in Ashburn, Virginia with his wife, son and two daughters. He loves sports and exercising, as well as traveling and spending time with his family.
After working on BOWA’s Project Manager team for six years, John Wiacek was promoted to Production Manager in April of 2018. In this role he manages multiple projects and communication with both clients and vendors. With family roots in the Washington area, John grew up in Potomac, Maryland and attended St. Alban’s High School in DC. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and worked in environmental policy research and advocacy in Easton, MD before joining BOWA in 2012. He currently lives in Adams Morgan and volunteers with Habitat for Humanity building homes in the DC area. John is an award-winning home brewer and, in the warmer months, you can often find him on the Eastern Shore participating in all kinds of water sports.
Ken joined BOWA as a Production Manager in April 2016, and brought with him over 30 years of hands-on experience in the design build remodeling industry. A northern Virginia native, Ken attended American University and soon after began developing a specialty in historical architecture and engineering. He later started his own residential remodeling company, focused on high-end home renovations in the local area. Ken’s attention to detail, exceptional customer service, dedication to quality craftsmanship and depth of experience are a perfect addition to BOWA’s Production Team. Growing up in Vienna and being actively involved in the community, through organizations such as Donate Life, gives Ken a great understanding of the DC Metro area and our clients’ homes and neighborhoods. Ken lives in Purcellville with his family and enjoys being outdoors and spending time with his five children and two grandchildren.
With BOWA since 2005, Adoni Lopez is a Customer Service Manager dedicated to our clients in the Potomac, Bethesda and Chevy Chase areas. His commitment to quickly resolving issues, excellent communication and delivering heroic service earn him rave reviews. He is well known for going above and beyond to ensure clients’ trust and happiness. Before stepping into this role, Adoni rose up through the company as a carpenter, senior carpenter and project manager. During that time he honed his carpentry skills, specializing in finish carpentry and cabinet making. He began pursuing his passion with formal carpentry training in middle school and now has more than 25 years of experience. His accomplishments have been honored with many craftsmanship awards at BOWA, as well as a PROS award from the Maryland Building Industry Association for Best Customer Service Technician. Originally from Quetzaltengo, Guatemala, Adoni moved to the DC area in 2001. He lives in Sterling with his wife, two kids and dog, and loves spending time with his family and watching movies.
