Today’s Appliances – New & Improved
Choosing new appliances for your home can be daunting. As manufacturers introduce new models and features on a regular basis, wading through all of the options to choose the best fit can be challenging. With the average appliance lasting 10 to 15 years, it’s important to choose ones that match both your cooking/cleaning needs and your personal sense of style. Following are some new product highlights and trends we thought you might find interesting.
Colored Kitchen Appliances
Over the past year, several manufacturers have added new and unexpected colors to their lines of kitchen appliances. Bertazzoni, an Italian manufacturer, now offers the ranges, hoods, and backsplashes in their Heritage Series in three new colors – burgundy, cream, and black. Dacor offers wall ovens, refrigerators, and even microwaves in exciting colors such as blue water and slate green. In addition, Viking recently expanded their line of appliances to now feature 24 finishes with colors ranging from pumpkin to plum.
Microwave Drawers
Believe it or not, the microwave is the second most commonly used kitchen appliance (behind the refrigerator) in today’s homes. With such a claim to fame, microwaves should be as carefully designed into your kitchen layout as are your refrigerator and range. A relatively new option that is already quite popular is the microwave drawer. Wolf, Viking, Dacor, and Sharp have all developed draw-style units, which conveniently install at waist height or lower within your cabinetry to create a fully integrated look. With all the bells and whistles you’d expect, this is a great option for today’s on-the-go family.
Outdoor Kitchens
With warmer weather in our sights, people will soon move their entertaining outdoors again. KitchenAid, Wolf, and Lynx all offer high-end outdoor kitchen appliances to help you get the party started! Outdoor ranges, beverage stations, refrigerators, ice makers and even pizza ovens can be combined to create a fully functional al fresco kitchen. To get the most out of your outdoor appliances, be sure to follow the manufacturers’ care and maintenance tips, such as using proper covers and storing the refrigerator inside during the winter.
Washer/Dryers
Over the past several years, front-load washers and dryers have gained great popularity, perhaps because they are designed to help reduce water and energy usage. Recently brightly colored units have become quite popular, as several brands have released blue, green, red, and even turquoise models. Several manufacturers, such as Electrolux and Bosch, have also released dryers with steam capacity, which helps to eliminate odors and reduce wrinkles. And now, accessories, such as storage bins, pedestals with drawers, and ironing systems, are available to provide added convenience for the homeowner.
ENERGY STAR
Did you know that ENERGY STAR appliances use between 10% and 50% less power and water than their non-ENERGY STAR counterparts? With the average home spending about $2,000 on power bills every year, it’s no surprise that energy-efficient appliances are in such demand. Bosch, Electrolux, Maytag, Whirlpool, and several other manufacturers have partnered with ENERGY STAR to release appliances that help to reduce energy and water usage – saving the environment as well as your wallet. When purchasing these appliances, make sure to look for the EnergyGuide label, which estimates the energy usage of the product, compares it with that of other products, and estimates the annual operating costs for that particular appliance. As you can see, many manufacturers are offering innovative ways of increasing both the functionality and the appearance of your home appliances. By choosing units that match both your long-term needs and your sense of style, you will surely remain happy with your purchase for many years to come.
