Transitional Style with Contemporary Finishes in Reston Whole-House Remodel

Homeowner Challenge:

Our client’s previous home was a large, custom house that provided more space, but left the family feeling distant from each other. She desired a smaller footprint, with a more comfortable environment for her three daughters. When she found this home by a lake in Reston, she saw its potential as a “cozy treehouse” filled with light. However, it needed a renovation to take it from dated and inefficient to the comfortable, inviting home of her dreams.

The BOWA Solution:

The design included updating the entire home to a transitional style with contemporary finishes. Expanded passageways and a new staircase created a more open and airy space throughout the main living area. The original dining room was transformed into a large mudroom with laundry area, walls of storage, and a large island for folding clothing or doing crafts and activities. The kitchen was renovated with modern, clean cabinetry and new appliances. Additional storage was created when the original wet bar passthrough to the living room was closed and replaced with new cabinetry. The master suite’s layout was reconfigured to build a larger walk-in closet and cozier sleeping area. The master bathroom now benefits from an oversized skylight that lets light pour into the renovated space. The family can now enjoy their “cozy treehouse” for years to come.

Project Highlights:

  • An office area in the kitchen now fondly known as “Mom’s command center.”
  • Yoga retreat on 4th level featuring large window-to-lake view
  • Two-sided fireplace with storage niche for family room and bench seating for kitchen.
  • Large guest bedroom with private refrigerator and coffee station.
